Palazzo Maffei

Palazzo Maffei

On the west side of Piazza Erbe, the majestic Palazzo Maffei is a magnificent example of Baroque style.  It was built where once the Roman Capitol, the Temple dedicated to Jupiter, Juno and Minerva, representing the Capitoline triad, was erected in 49 AD. The remains of columns and stone slabs can be admired in the cellars of the restaurant with the same name.

Towards 1405, the noble Maffei family asked a Roman architect to build their palace. At that time, the rich families of the city of Verona claimed the roots of their history from the young Venetian domination.  That is why the architecture of this palace is completely different from the neighbouring buildings, recalling the ancient Roman glory with fine details. From the first floor, you can see that five fornices support the second floor, finely decorated by shelves, balconies and columns. On the third floor, on the elegant balustrade, there are reproductions of the six gods: Hercules, Jupiter, Venus, Mercury, Apollo and Minerva, all made of local marble, except for Hercules , coming from an ancient temple. In 1663, a roof garden was built in the eighteenth century, which became famous thanks to a painting by Johann Endter from Nuremberg.
