HISTORY
Cisano is a small village in the municipality of Bardolino. Only a few years ago, the remains of a pile-dwelling village were discovered in the square near the lake, while its existence is already documented in writings from 915 and 1225. Its history is linked to the neighbouring municipality.
The hamlet boasts a Romanesque parish church that is one of the oldest on the lake, dating back to the 5th century AD. Initially called San Giuliano, it changed its name in the 11th century to Pieve di Santa Maria when the bell tower was built, while retaining its Romanesque pebbled façade and finished apse.
The historic centre hosts a curious centenary festival in September called 'Sagra dei Osei'. Literally meaning bird festival, in fact, it hosts birds of all kinds such as blackbirds, finches, nightingales, etc. in the alleys that 'clash' in singing contests, while predators demonstrate their performances. Tastes of the past are revived, such as the famous dish of polenta and birds.
